History of Grama Panchayat
Uzhamalakkal Panchayat came into existence on the 10th of December 1971. Before that, this area was part of Aryanad Panchayat. The president of the newly established Uzhamalakkal Panchayat was M. Prabhakaran. Initially, the headquarters of the Panchayat office was the Mahatma Gandhi Library building that was functioning in Ayyappankuzhi. M. Prabhakaran, who can be described as the architect of Uzhamalakkal Panchayat, was the president of Aryanad Panchayat, the first president of this panchayat with the formation of Uzhamalakkal Panchayat, and a well-known person in the social, political and cultural field. He was engaged in formulating and implementing action plans with a long-term vision for the emergence and progress of the panchayat. Kulappada Sree Dharmashasta Temple is a temple of historical importance and is more than 400 years old and was built by Umayamma Rani of the Koikkal Palace in Nedumangad. Similarly, the Eliyavoor Shiva Temple has an ancient and historical significance. The historical beginning of the Kuriyathi Shiva Temple is also a crowning example of cultural tradition. The Kaliyal Thampuran Temple in Kottayam has a history with the old dynasty. Another important Bhadrakali temple in this area is the Lakshmi Mangalam Temple located in Chakrapanipuram. The seven-day festival, which begins on the Revathi day of the Kumbha month and ends on the Thiruvathira day, is a national festival celebrated by all castes and religious groups in the country. Valukkonam Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, Carmela Mata Catholic Church, Manjammula, CSI Church Manikkapuram, Syrian Catholic Church Paruthikkuzhi, Malankara Syrian Catholic Church Tholoor, and Lutheran Mission Church Tholoor are the main Christian churches. The Puthukulangara Muslim Mosque and the Kanjiram Moodu Muslim Mosque in Kulappada make the place culturally important. One of the major rivers of Kerala, the Karamanayar, flows through the panchayat. The Shorlakode Road, one of the main roads of the state, connects this panchayat with Thiruvananthapuram and Ambasamudra. The prominent Eliyavur market in Uzhamalakkal panchayat was a market center that the people of the nearby panchayats of Aryanad, Vellanad and Tholikode relied on. The first government office in Uzhamalakkal was the Chavadi that functioned in Eliyavur. That is probably why this place is known as ‘Chavadinada’. In 1982, the Uzhamalakkal village office was shifted to its own building in Kulappada. The Katadi School, started by John Sar in 1924, was the first educational initiative in this area. The only high school in this area is SNHS located at Chakrapanipuram. The former speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, M. Vijayakumar, was an alumnus of this school. The first institution in the field of remote services was the primary health center established in Eliyavoor in 1972. The first post office was established in Puthukulangara. Before that, there was only one Anchalottakaran. This panchayat also has Shorlakode Road and many other passable roads. After bullock carts and horse carts, the people of the early days relied on the private bus RKN. Today, there is a KSRTC bus service from the depots of Nedumangad and Kattakada.
